Nu-Way Restaurant and Lounge: Spartanburg, SC

"World Famous Redneck Cheeseburger", I'll be the judge of that!

I drive by this place at least three or four times a week and it has taken me 18 months to finally pull over and see what this dive-bar has to offer. I mean, they have a weathered, torn, beat-up sign hanging that says "The Best Burger in the State". How could I go wrong?
Not being a huge fan of pimiento cheese I simply could not pass up on the "World Famous Redneck Cheeseburger" all the way at the recommendation of the wait staff. Speaking of staff, some of the most dedicated, friendliest and entertaining folk in the restaurant business I have encountered. And I was the odd person out as I was the only one in the joint that they didn't know by name and they actually had to ask me what I wanted to order unlike the other 30 people. You would never expect this from a place that looks like a crap-hole biker bar from the outside. Isn't there a metaphoric phrase that goes something like "don't judge a book by its cover"? Something like that.
I'm sure everyone reading this from Sparkle City side of town doesn't need me to tell you anything about this joint as you have discovered it years ago and want to keep it to yourselves. But for you folks on the South side of town, this place seriously is worth the drive. It is a shit-hole of a dive bar, but that is what makes this place so awesome. The grill is behind the bar along with the full kitchen. Your bartender, on some occasions is also your cook. The bun steamer thingy that gets a workout about every 30 seconds is the single coolest kitchen gadget I have ever seen and the owner will toss on her apron after stocking the beer cooler for 30 minutes just to catch-up on the overwhelming amount of orders coming in. This is the type of bar along with environment that you cannot find anywhere in Greenville (at least I haven't found yet). And once you get the food into your system, you will be hooked.

My Redneck Cheeseburger with onion, lettuce, Pimiento Cheese, mustard and chili with a side of fries was an experience I hadn't had in awhile. While I love me a gourmet burgers with fancy grade cows and imported toppings this and that, you just can't go wrong with a good old fashioned greasy bar burger. This burger has triggered a new sensation in my nerves or something as I crave this thing. Morning, night, it doesn't matter. And the fact of the matter that I drive past this place each and every single day on my way to the gym and on my way back to the office, is going to be the death of me. I admit, I skipped the gym the other day and found my car parked in the Nu-Way's parking lot. Yes I went in and yes I ordered another Redneck Cheeseburger. It has happened a few times now and it probably will continue.

Bottom-line: I love this place! This is my new burger joint and hopefully soon, they will know my name and know what to toss on the grill for me as soon as I walk through that door. After my first Redneck Cheeseburger I was so excited that I made plans to drop the kids off at Grandma's house three days later to take the wife so she could experience it for herself. She wasn't as excited about the burgers as me, but that is her fault for just ordering a plain burger, but she did say that she wished Simpsonville/Greenville had a place like this.

Sorry Spartanburg, the secret is out.
